Harriet Tubman High School
Founded in 1947, and located in Simpsonville, Maryland the Harriet Tubman Jr. - Sr. High School, served as the second high school in Howard County for African American students with the first being Cooksville High School, located in Cooksville, Maryland.
Harriet Tubman High School was the first high school in Howard County explicitly built for the education of African Americans from grades 7 through 12. The school was open for 16 years and was closed by Howard County in 1965.
During the Tubman era, many outstanding students attended and graduated becoming leaders in Howard County and all over the world. Retaining this legacy of early African American education in Howard County is important history for future generations.
